Rio 2016: Mikel Splashes $30, 000 On Dream Team


Chelsea star , Mikel Obi has reportedly splashed $30, 000 on the Nigerian Olympic football team, the Dream Team , in an effort to boost their moral ahead of the Rio Games , kicking off next week .

Obi , who was named the captain of the 85-man Nigerian Olympic contingent by the Sports Ministry early this week, was ostensibly moved by the plight of the Beijing 2008 silver medallists , who have been preparing in the US for the Rio Games with hardly any money.

According to supersport . com, the former junior international made the money available to the team on Wednesday and it will definitely go a long way in alleviating their financial woes .

Meanwhile , speaking ahead of the Dream Team ’ s opening match against Japan next Thursday, the Holland 2005 U20 World Cup silver medallist , said the team will be in Brazil to win gold medals.
Although Rio 2016 will be his first Olympics and the 29- year-old midfielder maintained he is ready to rise to the occasion .

He said : “ I don’ t think it will be a disadvantage . I think leadership is either you have it or you don’ t . Sometimes , people grow into leadership and sometimes people are born with leadership qualities.
“ I think I have always been in that leading role since my U -17 days , even when not wearing the captain ’ s band , I have always had people looking up to me to carry the team . ”
