… coach Assures U-23 Team’ll Be Solid For Olympics

The national U - 23 team Coach , Samson Siasia , has urged Nigerians not to press the panic button over his team’ s readiness for the football event of the forthcoming Rio Olympic Games . Siasia stressed that the absence of some notable names like Kelechi Iheanacho of Manchester City and Alex Iwobi of Arsenal would not affect the fortunes of the team in Brazil . The former International told New Telegraph that his target was to raise a solid team with emphasis on teamwork and not individual talents .

He said the current players on tour of the United States were doing well in training so far and assured that they would give a good account of themselves to make Nigerians proud at the games .
Siasia said : “ There are quality players in camp.
We are working hard to raise a very good team and so we are not bothered about individual talents. “ Some of the players like Iheanacho and Iwobi won ’ t be with us because of club commitments but we have good replacements .

“ It is also important to respect those who are going to make the final list because we are talking about a Nigerian team . We don ’ t need to panic . ” On the welfare of the team in camp , Siasia maintained that it was important to concentrate on the task ahead rather than dwell on problems .
“ We have decided to be focused in our quest to do very well in Brazil . We are working hard to get better and will be ready for the competition proper . Nigerians should not judge us with the friendly games , ” the coach added .
Nigeria will compete for honours against Sweden, Japan and Colombia in the preliminaries of the Rio Olympics football tournament. In 1996, Nigeria won gold medal at the Atlanta games while the country also settled for silver at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games .
